It takes about $16,000 a year to hold one person in the Butler County jail, where taxpayers kick in $44 a day to house each prisoner. That's more than double the average $600 a month to rent a home in Poplar Bluff for one year. It comes with free lodging, meals and health care, whether a prisoner requires something as simple as aspirin or as complicated as chemotherapy during their stay...
